This is a Research-based review. We did not use Otter.ai ourselves. Every score below is judged on Otter.ai's official pricing page, privacy policy, and press releases, on aggregated Trustpilot reviews, on Zapier's 2026 meeting-assistant roundup, and on court reporting about the privacy lawsuit, not on hands-on use. Where a criterion such as ease of use would normally come from our own testing, it is assessed here from documentation, tutorials, and what user reports describe, and each description says what it rests on.
Overall: 7.0/ 10
Otter.ai is an AI notetaker that joins video calls, transcribes them, and produces summaries and action items. It is the sixth review in our AI Productivity category, after Notion AI, Taskade, Reclaim.ai, Gamma, and ClickUp. This review is built from named sources only; we have not recorded a meeting with Otter.
Privacy, before anything else: Otter is defending a consolidated class action, In re Otter.AI Privacy Litigation, alleging that its notetaker recorded meetings without the consent of every participant. On 13 August 2026, a federal judge dismissed part of the case but let the core wiretap, California privacy, and Illinois biometric claims proceed. The ruling does not find that Otter broke the law, and the case is ongoing. Otter says it obtains permission and de-identifies audio before training its AI.
- According to the official pricing page, the free Basic plan includes 300 transcription minutes a month, a 30-minute limit per conversation, and only 3 lifetime file imports.
- The free plan's notetaker can join Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet automatically, one meeting at a time.
- Pro costs $16.99 a month, or $8.33 a month billed annually; Business is $30 a month, or $19.99 billed annually.
- Trustpilot shows 4.1/5 from 729 reviews, but 29% are one-star, citing transcripts that need editing and unexpected charges.
What Otter.ai Does, per Its Own Documentation
Per the official pricing page, Otter transcribes meetings and recordings in English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Chinese, identifies speakers, generates summaries with action items, and lets you query meetings through AI chat. In April 2026, Otter described itself as evolving from a notetaker into a “conversational knowledge engine,” and TechCrunch reported a feature that searches across connected tools. The two images below are official press graphics from Otter.

The Free Plan, in Detail
The Basic plan is free and, per the pricing page, includes 300 transcription minutes a month with no rollover, a maximum of 30 minutes per conversation, 3 imported audio or video files for the life of the account, access to the 25 most recent conversations, and 20 AI chat queries a month. The notetaker can join Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet calls automatically, one meeting at a time. In practice, the 30-minute cap matters most: a one-hour meeting will not be fully transcribed on the free plan.

Privacy and the Class Action
The case, In re Otter.AI Privacy Litigation in the US District Court for the Northern District of California, brings together four proposed class actions filed in August and September 2025. The plaintiffs allege the notetaker joined calls and recorded, transcribed, and retained them without the consent the law requires, captured voiceprints, and used meeting data to improve Otter's models. On 13 August 2026, Judge Eumi K. Lee granted Otter's motion to dismiss in part, but let the federal wiretap, California privacy, and Illinois biometric-privacy claims proceed, per UC Today's report. The ruling does not decide whether Otter broke the law.
Otter's own documents describe its side. Its privacy policy, updated 16 June 2026, says it trains its AI on de-identified audio and on transcripts, and that users are responsible for getting permission before recording others. Its privacy and security page says customer data is not used to train outside providers' models and lists SOC 2 Type 2 and AES-256 encryption. If you record client or team calls, tell participants and check your local consent rules.
