Quick Verdict

// Hands-on tested
★★★☆☆ 3.7 / 5
Best for: teams already living inside Notion who want AI woven into every page · Price: Free plan gets a limited AI trial only · full AI access requires the $20/user/month Business plan

Teknexia AI Tool Evaluation Framework

Scored against our site-wide 5-criteria framework. This is the canonical score for Notion AI — it also appears on the AI Productivity category page, pulled live from this page.

Ease of use — 8/10Every feature we tried (chat, page summaries, translation, inline rewriting) worked through one consistent interface, in French, with sources cited automatically.
Output quality — 8/10Answers about our own workspace were accurate with zero hallucinated pages, and both the summary and translations we tested were correct on the first try.
Workflow integration — 9/10This is where Notion AI wins: it reads and edits your actual pages in place and cites them live, something a standalone chatbot simply can't do.
Pricing value — 5/10Full AI access is gated behind the $20/user/month Business plan; the cheaper Plus tier only gets a limited trial, not real everyday use.
Beginner friendliness — 7/10The chat entry point is obvious, but the in-line "Compétences" menu and passive autocomplete are easy to miss without exploring the interface.

Overall: 7.4/ 10

Notion AI lives inside Notion itself — no separate app, no copy-pasting your notes somewhere else. It can answer questions about your own pages, summarize documents, translate text, and rewrite what you've already written. We ran it hands-on in a real workspace to see if that deep integration actually justifies the price gate around it.

Key Takeaways
  • We asked Notion AI what pages existed in our workspace and it correctly listed all 7 real pages and databases, with clickable citations to each source — no hallucinated content (our own test, Notion workspace, 2026).
  • Full AI access (chat, generate, autofill, translate, Meeting Notes) is only unlocked on the $20/user/month Business plan; Free and Plus ($10/user/month) get a limited trial, not ongoing access (Notion, 2026).
  • Page summarization and translation were both accurate on the first attempt in our test, completing in roughly 5–8 seconds each.
  • Passive AI autocomplete did not trigger while typing normally — the useful in-line editing tools (rewrite, proofread, explain) live in a separate "Compétences" menu you select text to reach.

What Is Notion AI Used For?

Notion AI is an AI layer built into every page of a Notion workspace rather than a separate app you switch to. It can search across your own pages and databases to answer questions, summarize long documents, translate text, and rewrite or proofread anything you've written, all without copy-pasting content elsewhere (Notion, 2026).

That's the whole pitch, really: a general chatbot knows nothing about your notes until you paste them in. Notion AI already has access to everything sitting in your workspace — meeting notes, task lists, budgets, wikis — and it'll tell you exactly which page an answer came from.

What We Actually Tested

We ran Notion AI inside a real, active workspace ("Espace de Teknexia Infos") that already had genuine content in it: a welcome guide, a weekly task list, a monthly budget with two linked databases, and a meeting-notes page. From there, we tested six distinct capabilities one at a time.

Our Test Protocol

These notes document what we did during testing — they are separate from the 5-criteria Teknexia AI Tool Evaluation Framework score in the Quick Verdict above, not a replacement or duplicate of it.

TestPrompt / ActionResultNote
Q&A across the workspace"Quelles pages existent dans mon espace de travail et de quoi parlent-elles ?"Correctly listed all 7 real pages/databases with clickable source citations for eachNo hallucinations detected
AI Writer / text generation"Rédige un court paragraphe marketing (3 phrases) pour annoncer le lancement d'un café de quartier éco-responsable à Lyon, ton chaleureux."Full 3-sentence paragraph generated in ~5s, matched the requested warm toneOn-brief, no edits needed
Page summarization"Résume la page 'Liste de tâches hebdomadaire' en 2 phrases."Accurate summary matching the real page content (correct week, correct checked-off tasks)Page load visible before summarizing
Translation"Traduis en anglais et en espagnol : [café announcement sentence]"Correct, natural translations in both languages in ~5sNo corrections needed
Passive autocompleteTyped a partial sentence directly into a pageNo ghost-text suggestion appeared automaticallyNot triggered passively in our workspace
In-line AI editing ("Compétences")Selected a sentence → "Améliorer le style"Edit applied directly to the document in placeMenu also offers Proofread, Explain, Edit with AI

The thing that stood out across every single test was the sourcing. Each answer linked straight back to the page it came from, visible in a "Connaissances" (Knowledge) panel next to the chat. That's a genuinely different experience from pasting a document into a general chatbot — Notion AI already knows which of your pages matter before you even ask.

Pricing in 2026: What's Actually Free vs. Gated

Notion AI isn't sold as a separate add-on anymore — it's bundled into the per-seat workspace price, though full access still sits behind the higher tiers. Here's how it breaks down on Notion's official pricing page: Free is $0/member/month with only a limited AI trial; Plus is $10/member/month and gets the same limited trial, not ongoing access; Business, at $20/member/month, is the first tier with full AI — chat, generate, autofill, translate, and AI Meeting Notes; Enterprise is custom-priced with the same AI features plus a zero-data-retention option (Notion, 2026).

That distinction is easy to miss, and most reviews gloss over it: paying for Notion itself on Plus ($10/user/month) doesn't buy ongoing AI access. You need Business, at $20/user/month, for that. On top of the seat price, Notion's newer Custom Agents and Workers run on a separate metered credit system too — $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits, with no rollover if you don't use them (Notion, 2026).

The practical read is simple: on Free or Plus, what you get is a taste, not a real tool. Day-to-day use effectively starts at Business — and that's a meaningful jump in price for a small team.

Notion AI vs ChatGPT: Which One Should You Actually Pick?

ChatGPT and Claude are still stronger at open-ended reasoning, longer creative work, and anything unrelated to your notes. Notion AI wins the moment a question depends on something you've already written down — in our test, asking it what pages existed in our workspace produced an accurate, cited answer in seconds. A general chatbot would've needed all that content pasted in manually, page by page.

The tradeoff comes down to cost and depth. A $20/mo ChatGPT Plus or Claude subscription gives one person broad reasoning power anywhere; Notion AI's full access is priced per seat on a $20/user/month workspace plan and stays scoped to whatever's actually inside Notion.

What Other Users Say

2.3/5 on Trustpilot, based on 422 reviews.

Notion's Trustpilot reviews cover the whole product, not just its AI features, and run more critical than our hands-on result for the AI layer specifically. Recurring complaints center on pricing and monetization — including how AI access is billed — plus account-support friction and occasional reliability issues. A minority of reviewers do call the broader tool flexible and useful for notes and project management.

Pricing from Notion (2026). Accuracy and integration findings are based on our own hands-on test above.

If your team's documentation, tasks, and notes already live in Notion, the AI layer on top is a genuine multiplier — it answers questions and edits pages without you ever leaving the app. If your work's scattered across a dozen tools, or you need heavier reasoning, a standalone assistant you're already paying for will get you further per dollar.

Does Notion AI Struggle With Anything?

The biggest friction we hit wasn't accuracy — it was discoverability. Passive autocomplete never once appeared while we typed normally, and the in-line editing tools (rewrite, proofread, explain) are tucked inside a text-selection menu instead of being offered proactively. Our test workspace was also small, so we can't yet say how citation accuracy holds up across a much bigger, messier workspace with hundreds of pages.

Pros & Cons of Notion AI

Pros

  • Answers were accurate and correctly cited every real page in our workspace, with zero hallucinated content
  • Summarization and translation both worked correctly on the first try, in under 10 seconds each
  • Edits and rewrites happen directly inside your existing pages — no copy-pasting into a separate app
  • One consistent interface covers Q&A, writing, summarizing, and translating

Cons

  • Full AI access requires the $20/user/month Business plan — Free and Plus only get a limited trial
  • Passive autocomplete didn't trigger during normal typing in our test
  • In-line AI editing tools are hidden behind a text-selection menu, easy to miss at first
  • Custom Agents/Workers run on a separate metered credit system that can add extra cost on top of the seat price

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Notion AI actually free?
Only a limited trial. Notion's Free and Plus ($10/user/month) plans give you a taste of the AI features, but ongoing full access — chat, generate, autofill, translate, Meeting Notes — requires the Business plan at $20/user/month (Notion, 2026).
Is Notion AI worth it over ChatGPT or Claude?
It depends on where your work lives. In our test, Notion AI answered questions about our own workspace with correct, cited results in seconds — something a standalone chatbot can't do without manual pasting. If your work isn't centralized in Notion, a standalone assistant is likely better value.
How much does Notion AI cost in 2026?
AI is bundled into the per-seat price rather than sold separately: Free ($0) and Plus ($10/user/month) only get a limited trial; Business ($20/user/month) is the first tier with full ongoing AI access; Enterprise is custom-priced (Notion, 2026).
Does Notion AI hallucinate or make things up?
Not in our test. Asking it to list every page in our workspace returned an accurate list of all 7 real pages and databases, each with a clickable citation back to the source. That's a small-workspace result, not a guarantee at much larger scale.

Our Notion AI Verdict

Notion AI earns its place if your documentation, tasks, and notes already live inside Notion — it genuinely knows your workspace, cites its sources, and edits in place, and we confirmed all of that works accurately in our own test. It's a harder sell if you're a solo user, or you're already paying for ChatGPT or Claude directly, since full access sits behind the $20/user/month Business plan rather than one of Notion's cheaper tiers.
