Teknexia AI Tool Evaluation Framework

This is a Research-based review. We did not use Midjourney ourselves. Every score below is judged on Midjourney's own documentation and announcements, its officially published example graphics, aggregated user reviews on Trustpilot, and a reputable third-party comparison from Zapier, not on hands-on use. Where a criterion such as ease of use would normally come from our own testing, it is assessed here from tutorials, documentation, and what reviewers report instead, and the descriptions say so.

Ease of use — 6/10Assessed from documentation and reviewer reports, not direct use. Midjourney is available on both its website and Discord, and Midjourney's own update posts show the web editor still changing quickly. User reviews on Trustpilot, however, repeatedly describe frustration with the experience and with prompts that don't produce what was asked for.
Output quality — 8/10Assessed from Midjourney's own published example graphics and third-party reviews. Zapier's 2026 roundup calls it the best for artistic results, while noting that competing tools have caught up on prompt adherence. Midjourney says V8.2 focuses on aesthetics, and that V8.1 improved prompt adherence and text rendering. We have not verified either claim ourselves.
Workflow integration — 7/10Assessed from Midjourney's announcements. Its newest edit model supports instruction-based editing, inpainting, outpainting, and up to four image references at once, alongside personalization and moodboards. Discord and web access both exist.
Pricing value — 5/10Assessed from the official plans page, checked on 20 September 2026. There is no free plan, so every user pays before generating anything, and Trustpilot reviewers frequently cite price and billing as sore points. In its favor, the entry tier is $10 a month, and Relax mode gives unlimited images from Standard upward.
Beginner friendliness — 6/10Assessed from documentation and reviewer reports. The paywall, the two-interface setup, and a steady stream of feature changes make the first session harder to judge in advance than a free tool like Ideogram, though the web app appears to be the easier route.

Overall: 6.4/ 10

Midjourney is one of the best-known AI image generators, and it was the most obvious gap in our AI Image cluster alongside Ideogram, Canva AI, Leonardo AI, and Kittl. This review is built entirely from sources we can name: Midjourney's official documentation and update posts, its own published example graphics, Trustpilot's aggregated reviews, and Zapier's third-party comparison. We haven't generated a single image with it, and nothing on this page claims otherwise.

How to read this review: the Research-based badge means no hands-on testing. Statements marked "Midjourney says" come from the company's own announcements and are not independently verified. Statements marked "reviewers report" come from third-party reviews, which reflect other people's experience, not ours.

Key Takeaways
  • According to Midjourney's official plans page, there is no free plan: all four tiers are paid subscriptions, starting at $10 a month.
  • Zapier's 2026 comparison calls Midjourney the best for artistic results, but says others now beat it on prompt adherence.
  • On Trustpilot, Midjourney holds a 1.6/5 TrustScore from 372 reviews, with prompt-following, account bans, billing, and support the most repeated complaints.
  • Midjourney's docs list images as visible to others by default, with private Stealth Mode only on the Pro and Mega plans.

What Midjourney Is, per Its Own Documentation

Midjourney generates images from text prompts. According to Zapier, it runs both as a web app and inside Discord. Midjourney's update blog gives the recent timeline: V8.1 became the default model on 11 June 2026, V8.2 launched on 24 July 2026 with a stated focus on aesthetics, image quality, and personalization, and a first V8.2 image edit model opened for public testing on 27 August 2026.

Midjourney's announcements describe V8.2 as producing images that are more creative and bold, with fewer low-quality results, and personalization that better learns your taste from your image ratings. Its edit model, per the 27 August post, can edit images with instructions, generate from up to four reference images, change or extend parts of an image, and work with personalization, moodboards, and style references. Midjourney itself describes the post as an early test and asks the community to report edge cases, which is worth keeping in mind before treating the feature as settled.

Official Examples From Midjourney

We don't show our own generations, because we haven't made any. The two graphics below were published by Midjourney itself in its 27 August 2026 edit-model announcement, and they show the company's own picture of what the feature does: small reference images on the left, edited or combined results on the right. They are marketing examples chosen by Midjourney, not evidence of typical results.

Pricing, Verified on the Official Page

We read Midjourney's official plan-comparison page in a browser on 20 September 2026. It states that all Midjourney plans are subscriptions that renew automatically, lists four tiers, and offers a 20% discount for paying annually. It does not list a free tier.

The details that matter

  • No free plan. The official page lists paid tiers only. Zapier's 2026 comparison adds that free trials are currently suspended, though it notes they have occasionally returned. Check Midjourney's current pricing page before assuming either way.
  • Privacy costs more. Per the plans page, Stealth Mode, which keeps images and videos private, is available only on Pro and Mega. Zapier notes that images are otherwise visible by default on the Explore page and on profiles.
  • Commercial use. The plans page says that if you have subscribed at any point, you can use your images and videos in nearly any way, but a company with more than $1,000,000 in gross annual revenue must subscribe to Pro or Mega. Read the full Terms of Service before commercial use.

What Third-Party Reviewers Say

Zapier's best AI image generators roundup, last updated in April 2026 and reviewed in July 2026, is the most current reputable comparison we could read in full. It describes Midjourney as the best pick for artistic results and credits its improved web app and customization options. It also cautions that other tools have overtaken Midjourney on prompt adherence, that images are public by default, and that free trials are suspended. Those are Zapier's judgments, not ours.

What Other Users Say

What Other Users Say

★ 1.6/5 on Trustpilot, based on 372 reviews, with 77% at one star and 10% at five stars.

This section carries extra weight in a Research-based review, because reviewer experience is one of our main sources of qualitative data. Midjourney's Trustpilot profile is heavily negative. Reviewers most often complain that prompts aren't followed and results are inconsistent or unusable, that accounts are suspended suddenly with little explanation, that support is hard to reach, and that price and annual billing feel unfair. Some reviewers do praise the atmospheric detail and imaginative range of the output. Trustpilot reviewers skew toward unhappy customers, and reviews are not fact-checked by the platform, so treat the score as a signal about frustrations, not a verdict on image quality. Midjourney replies to about 21% of negative reviews, per Trustpilot.

Midjourney vs Ideogram

Ideogram is the closest tool we have already reviewed: both are focused on pure image generation. The table combines our published, verified Ideogram data (from our July 2026 hands-on review) with Midjourney data from the sources above. The methods differ, so read the scores as a comparison of evidence, not a lab test.

Text rendering: in our own Ideogram test, small background text came out garbled. Midjourney says V8.1 improved text rendering, and we have not been able to check that claim.

Cons

  • No free plan, so you pay before you can judge the output
  • Trustpilot score of 1.6/5, with prompt-following, account suspensions, billing, and support the most repeated complaints
  • Images are public by default; privacy needs the Pro plan or above
  • Zapier says competing tools now beat it on prompt adherence
