Zapier vs n8n: Which AI Automation Tool Should You Choose in 2026?
Comparison Snapshot
// Data-based comparisonZapier and n8n both connect apps and automate work, but they take almost opposite approaches to get there: Zapier bets on an AI assistant that drafts the automation for you, n8n bets on a free, self-hosted, node-based canvas with no execution cap. We already tested both hands-on separately — this article puts the real numbers from both tests side by side.
- Zapier scored 7.4/10 and n8n scored 7.2/10 on our Teknexia framework — close overall, but the two tools win on different criteria (our own testing, 2026).
- n8n's Cloud plan starts at $20/month for 2,500 executions with a 14-day free trial, and its Community Edition is free to self-host with no execution cap. Zapier's Free plan caps at 100 tasks/month and two-step Zaps only, with real multi-step or AI-powered use starting at $19.99/month (Zapier, n8n, 2026).
- In our n8n test, every execution completed in 1.2 seconds or less with zero failures. In our Zapier test, Copilot generated a complete multi-branch Zap from a plain-English brief in under 30 seconds — a build-speed advantage, not a runtime one, since we haven't benchmarked Zapier's own execution speed head-to-head.
- Zapier holds a 1.3/5 rating on Trustpilot (311 reviews, dominated by billing complaints); n8n holds 3.1/5 (47 reviews, smaller sample, split between fair-code fans and operational complaints).
Framework Scores, Side by Side
Both scores come from our own hands-on testing, using the same 5-criteria Teknexia AI Tool Evaluation Framework. Full test protocols and screenshots are in the individual reviews linked below.

Pricing Compared
These two price automation in fundamentally different ways, which matters more than the sticker price alone. n8n's Community Edition is free to self-host with no execution cap; its Cloud plans bill by monthly workflow executions, starting at $20/month for 2,500 executions on Starter, with a 14-day free trial and no card required. Zapier has no free self-hosting option — its Free plan caps you at 100 tasks/month and two-step Zaps only, with real multi-step or AI-powered use starting at $19.99/month billed annually for 750 tasks (Zapier, n8n, 2026).
Zapier bills per completed task (each Zap step that runs); n8n Cloud bills per workflow execution (the whole workflow run, regardless of how many nodes it contains). A single Zapier task and a single n8n execution aren't the same unit, so comparing sticker prices alone can be misleading — a workflow with many steps costs more on Zapier's per-task model than the equivalent single-execution n8n run.
| Plan tier | Zapier | n8n |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0/mo — 100 tasks, 2-step Zaps only | $0 — self-hosted, no execution cap (Community Edition) |
| Cheapest paid | $19.99/mo billed annually — 750 tasks, multi-step + AI steps | $20/mo — 2,500 executions (Cloud Starter), 14-day free trial |
| Team/scale tier | $69/mo billed annually — 2,000 tasks, up to 25 users | Custom Cloud tiers scale by execution volume |
What Other Users Say
The gap here is real, not a rounding difference. Zapier's Trustpilot reviews are dominated by billing and subscription complaints — unexpected charges, task-overage costs, and difficulty getting a refund or downgrade on an annual plan — even though reviewers largely concede the automation itself works. n8n's much smaller review base splits differently: fans point to the free, self-hosted, fair-code model as a genuine cost saver; critics report workflow crashes and slow support response, which is more an operational complaint than a knock on the automation engine itself.

Analysis by Criteria
Ease of Use and Getting Started
Zapier wins this one clearly in our testing: describing an automation in plain English and getting a complete, correctly-sequenced multi-branch Zap back in under 30 seconds removes the hardest part of automation for a non-technical user — knowing which app, trigger, and action to even pick. n8n's node-based canvas is powerful and, in our test, extremely reliable once built, but it asks more of you upfront: you're wiring nodes yourself rather than describing an outcome in a sentence.
Reliability and Speed
This is where we have to be careful about comparing apples to apples. Our n8n test measured actual execution speed: a Manual Trigger node completed in 4ms, an HTTP Request to a public API returned in 250–560ms across repeated runs, and a full two-node workflow completed end to end in 1.2 seconds or less, every time, with zero failed executions. Our Zapier test measured something different — how fast Copilot could build a working Zap from a plain-English brief (under 30 seconds, twice). We haven't run a comparable raw execution-speed benchmark on Zapier, so we can't declare a runtime speed winner here; what we can say is n8n's execution reliability in our test was excellent, and Zapier's build speed in our test was excellent, for two genuinely different metrics.
Pricing Value for Regular Use
n8n edges ahead here, mainly because the free self-hosted tier has no execution cap at all — a real option for technical users willing to run their own instance. Zapier's Free plan is real but narrow (100 tasks, two-step Zaps only), and its task-based billing is, per its own Trustpilot reviews, the single most common source of billing surprise. n8n's Cloud pricing is more predictable per execution but still requires paying once you're past self-hosting or Community Edition's practical limits.
Beginner Friendliness
Zapier is the easier on-ramp for someone with zero automation background, per our test: Copilot handles app and trigger selection, the hardest conceptual step for a beginner. n8n's canvas has a real learning curve, though it rewards that investment with more granular control and, in our test, flawless execution reliability once a workflow was built correctly.
Which One Should You Choose?
There's no single winner here — the right pick depends on your profile more than on the overall score.
- Non-technical and want AI to draft the automation for you: Zapier. Copilot's plain-English-to-working-Zap speed, confirmed in our test, is the fastest on-ramp we've tested for someone who doesn't want to learn a canvas.
- Technical and comfortable building a workflow node by node: n8n. The free self-hosted tier has no execution cap, and our test showed genuinely excellent reliability and speed once a workflow is built.
- Budget is the deciding factor: n8n. Self-hosting is free indefinitely; Zapier's free tier is real but too narrow for most actual automation needs.
- You want to pay for convenience and don't mind task-based billing: Zapier Professional, but budget for it carefully — task overages are the most common complaint in Zapier's own user reviews.

Our Verdict
Zapier and n8n scored within 0.2 points of each other on our framework (7.4 vs 7.2), and that closeness reflects reality: neither tool is simply better, they're built for different users. Zapier wins on approachability, thanks to Copilot turning plain English into a working Zap in seconds. n8n wins on cost predictability and execution reliability, backed by a free self-hosted tier with no cap and a test run where every single execution succeeded. Pick based on whether you'd rather describe an automation in a sentence or build it on a canvas — and read our full Zapier Review and n8n Review for the complete test details behind these numbers.
